West Virginia Manufacturer and State Agency Win Prsidential Export Award

Charleston, WV - Kanawha Scales & Systems Inc. and the West Virginia Development Office (WVDO), International Division, were recently honored as recipients of the President's "E" Award.

The "E" Award is the highest U.S. government recognition any U.S.. entity may receive for supporting export activity.  Only previous recipients of "E" Awards may compete for "E Star" Awards.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke presented the awards in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 5 during a ceremony at the National District Export Council Conference.  The West Virginia business and state agency were among 21 recipients of the "E" Award and "E Star" Award.

"We are honored that West Virginia business Kanawha Scales and WVDO's export promotion program have been recongnized with this prestigious award," said Gov. Joe Manchin.  "International trade is a key to the state's enomomic growth.  We hope this recognition encourages more of West Virginia's small- and medium-sized businesses to pursue international business opportunities."

Kanawha Scales designs and manufactures weighing, control and material handling systems.  The company exports its high speed precision train loadout systems to countries such as Canada, Brazil, Columbia, People's Republic of China, Australia, India, Saudia Arabia and South Africa.  The "E" Award adds to the the export honors the Putnam County-based company has received over the years, including the Governor's Awards for Excellence in Exporting.

In selecting WVDO for the award, the U.S. Department of Commerce announcement cited the agency's commitment to West Virginia's export expansion, counseling and assistancce that enabled numberous companies to participate in appropriate trade promotion programs that led to significant opportunities.  Export sales in West Virginia increased from $3.16 billion in 2005 to $5.63 billion in 2008.

"Exporting is vital in today's global market," said Kelley Goes, West Virginia Secretary of Commerce.  "Achievements such as these from both our private and public sectors help build new business, expand markets and make valuable contributions to our economy on a state and national level."

Accepting the award for Kanawha Scales were Jim Bradbury, president, and Bill McHale, vice president of international sales.  Representing WVDO were export promotion staff members Debra Martin and Caitlin Ashley.

The Presidential "E" Award was created by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to recognize persons, firms, or organizations that  contribute significantly to increasing United States exports.  The Presidential "E Star" Award recognizes continued superior performance in increasing or promoting exports.  The International Trade Administration, which seeks to imporve the global business environment and help U.S. firms to complete and win both at home and abroad, manages the award program that has recognized more than 2,500 firms since its inception.
