Corporate History

In the Beginning

Founded in 1954 by Paul Bradbury, Kanawha Scales was originally known as Kanawha Valley Scale Service (KVSS). Prior to starting his own company, Paul was employed by Fairbanks Scales, a division of Colt Industries.

The primary focus of KVSS was strictly a scale service company providing maintenance and calibration services to the various chemical/manufacturing plants in West Virginia’s Kanawha Valley. Due to the availability and abundance of natural resources such as coal, natural gas, and salt brine, the Kanawha Valley was and still is one of the chemical manufacturing capitals of the world. In addition to natural resources, the Kanawha Valley also served as an early hub for river barge transportation with connections via the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to the Gulf of Mexico. The area also benefited from class-one rail transportation provided by Conrail, Norfolk Southern, and CSX railroads.

With the development of the nation’s interstate systems, the Kanawha Valley became an important intersection for three major highways. These highways serve 70% of the nation’s population within a five-hour radius of Charleston, WV.

As the Kanawha Valley grew and developed, so did KVSS. Paul’s brother George joined the company in 1958. Later, the first two employees outside of the Bradbury family were hired: Paul Burdette in 1965 and Dallas Harvey in 1970. In fact, Dallas still works full time for Kanawha Scales.

Growth and Expansion

In 1969, KVSS became incorporated. In 1982, Paul’s son Jim took over as President of Kanawha Valley Scale Service. In 1984, the name of the company was changed to Kanawha Scales & Systems (KSS) to better reflect the focus and direction of the company. Due to Jim Bradbury’s aggressive growth philosophy, the 1980’s were a time of rapid expansion for KSS.

  • 1982 – KSS made first acquisition of Toledo Scale in Parkersburg, WV
  • 1984 – Opened Fairmont, WV location
  • 1985 – Acquired Cintron Scale in Cincinnati, OH. Cintron later acquired three other scale companies in the Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati areas allowing for rapid growth and increased service area.
  • 1988 – Acquired Z-Weigh, Inc. in Michigan. Z-Weigh later acquired William Pike Co. which allowed for expansion into Detroit and Flint.
  • 1991 – Opened location in Pikeville, KY
