At the end of December 2019, after 35 years in the weighing industry, Gary Young of our Carnegie Branch is retiring. Gary’s long career in the scale industry and his many contributions and achievements are certainly worth celebrating.
After graduating from American University in D.C. and working several years for the D.C. Metro where Gary developed expertise in transportation, specifically rail, Gary moved his family from Washington DC to the Wheeling/Pittsburgh area in 1984 and joined Ohio Valley Scale to work in the family business, alongside his dad, brother, sister and brother-in-law.
Gary was initially assigned financial management duties and helped clean up a somewhat loose operation. Then seeking more risk and adventure, Gary accepted the assignment to be a full-time commissioned field sales representative with the objective to develop a customer base and branch sales/service operation in the Pittsburgh/ Western PA area.
More recently, with Gary’s background in rail weighing, he has won huge orders in the Oil and Gas industry providing in-motion “ballast mounted pit-less scale” solutions (Weighlines & Rail Boss) to Markwest at four locations. In 2018, Gary beat out Mettler Toledo and Brechbuhler, winning the contract to provide seven Rail Scales to the new Shell Ethane Cracker in Monaca, PA. In his spare time, Gary grew into a skilled Safety Manager and an OHSA certified trainer for our company and had our EMR (lost time accident) rate down to 0.81.
Gary has raised four outstanding children and finds time on the side to serve his community as a legal court advocate for the underprivileged who need help and guidance in legal proceedings.
